2016 Arkansas Military Expo
A visitor to the 2016 Arkansas Military Expo looks at ski-equipped LC-130 Hercules on the ramp at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., Sept. 17, 2016. The aircraft, which is assigned to the 109th Airlift Wing, New York Air National Guard, can land on conventional runways, but has been modified with retractable skis to land on snow and ice. The primary mission is supporting the scientific community by transporting cargo and personnel in the Arctic and Antarctic. The aircraft has been fitted with rockets, four on each side, for jet-assisted-takeoffs when operating from rough, unprepared snow surfaces or when shorter takeoff runs are required.
