LITTLE ROCK AIR FORCE BASE, Ark. -- Members of Team Little Rock and community members are invited to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with a commencement and commemorative walk culminating with a lunch reception here, Jan. 18.
The event will begin with the iconic “I Have A Dream” speech with guest speaker Dr. Kevin Kelly, Little Rock 2nd Baptist Church Pastor, starting at 10 a.m. at Herk Hall.
“I think it’s important for the Air Force to reflect on the ideas and accomplishments of Dr. King,” said Tech. Sgt. Nika Thomas, 189th Maintenance Group unit training manger. “People from different backgrounds and walks of life can now come together and complete a common goal that is bigger than themselves.”
Guiding the observance committee is Imo Taylor, 913th Airlift Group finance specialist, who hosted the event here eight years prior.
“I encourage everyone, even folks within the community, to attend,” said Taylor. “I truly believe this experience will motivate people to use their special talents and help others. Find a way to make an impact using your unique skills. You might be able to reach people that others cannot.”
After the commencement, members are encouraged to participate in a commemorative walk from the hall to Hangar 1080. The committee will provide tribute posters and signs for the walk.
“The MLK holiday is a ‘Day on, not a day off’, which resonates with our ‘service before self’ core value,” said Taylor. “If we can make a positive difference in one person’s life, what a difference that can make. I hope those who attend will find greater appreciation in where we came from and where we can go as a nation.”
The lunch reception will start at 11:30 a.m. at Hangar 1080 with Col. Christopher Lay, 913th Airlift Group Commander, as the guest speaker. Those who wish to attend must RSVP by Jan. 11.
