A group of visitors to Central High School, in Little Rock, Ark., listen as Interpretive Park Ranger Jodi Morris, speaks about the “Little Rock Nine,” Feb. 28, 2018. On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court declared all laws establishing segregated schools to be unconstitutional, and by 1957 the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) had registered nine African American students to attend Central High. However, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus deployed the Arkansas National Guard to the school to support segregationists, and it took the intervention of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who sent more than 11,500 Soldiers from 101st Airborne Division to ensure the safety of the nine students. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Jeff Walston/Released)
